HOW TO BE A WRITER, NOT GO CRAZY AND SURVIVE
Over the years, I’ve learned how to survive emotionally and psychologically in
Hollywood so I didn’t end up floating face down in Norma Desmond’s swimming pool. (See SUNSET BOULEVARD, the movie. It’s fantastic. One of the top ten movies of all time.)
I don’t get my ego strokes only if someone likes the script, or it gets bought, or it gets made. That’s a losing game. Those things are totally out of my control and, frankly, for all of us, it’s such a long shot, I’d hate to only feel good if someone else approves of what I do. It’s not the way I want to live my life and I don’t.
I take my ego satisfaction from what I can control – my writing, the screenplay itself.
If I have reached the potential of the idea, given the script my all, maximized every scene, honed every piece of dialogue, perfected every scene description, every transition, every everything. If I’ve done the best I can, gave it my all, left it all on the playing field, then I can move on to my next project with no regrets. I can be happy about my writing. I can be happy.
