THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT RULE IN SCREENWRITING

Every scene must move the story forward.

If you can remove the scene without changing the ‘A’ story, then remove it.

Those of you who have spent time in the editing room cutting a rough cut down to running time know

that the first scenes to go are the ones that don’t change the ‘A’ story when they’re deleted.
