TOM LAZARUS INTERVIEWS NORMA DESMOND PART TWO
Silent screen icon Norma Desmond finally agrees to an interview. I meet her at her Sunset Boulevard mansion. She sits regally by the decaying swimming pool.
TOM LAZARUS: Miss Desmond, this is an honor. Thank you very much for this opportunity.
N.D.: I owe it to the millions of fans who have never forgiven me for deserting them.
T.L.: My first question is: after the last scene in SUNSET BOULEVARD…
Miss Desmond comes to life.
N.D.: My close up!
T.L.: Yes, your close-up, what happened after that?
Ms. Desmond slowly breaks into her signature smile.
N.D.: I gave the greatest performance of my career!
T.L.: I’m not sure I understand.
N.D.: Don’t you read the papers? It was front page news for weeks. Across the globe. The “Trial of the Century.” I was brilliant.
T.L.: This was the trial for murder, for shooting the screenwriter?
N.D.: Yes, Joe, the screenwriter. Wonderful in a suit. Good shoulders.
T.L.: Did you take the stand at your trial?
N.D.: Of course I testified. I couldn’t disappoint the millions who have missed me so.
T.L.: And how did it go?
N.D.: I rehearsed with Max – the old team back together again – and I was breathtaking.
T.L.: What did you say?
N.D.: Say? Say?? Norma Desmond doesn’t need words…with this face.
